About the village of Northport

Northport, New York is a historic maritime village on the northern shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, New York. Initially designated "Great Cow Harbour" by 17th-century English colonists, the area was officially renamed the area Northport in 1837. Over the years Northport has expanded from its original borders, annexing other established communities.
Northport is known for its Victorian era village center, still featuring the trolley tracks that were used to bring visitors from the Long Island Rail Road Station to the harbor. Northport's Main Street runs from the Village Green along the harbor-front to Vernon Valley, which has since become part of the neighboring community of East Northport. As of 2010, the village has a population of about 7,401+ residents and uses the Northport-East Northport School District in Huntington, NY along with other surrounding communities.
